This Saturday: GIRLS RUN RIOT

In the 1950’s Americans were encouraged by religious leaders and law enforcement officials, notably J. Edgar Hoover, to view juvenile delinquency as the nation’s number one domestic issue. Always eager to exploit a trend, low-budget filmmakers responded with a series of sensationalistic “ripped from the headlines” pictures, including a sub-genre of films depicting (allegedly) teenaged girls behaving badly. Call it teensploitation. These stories flirted with nihilism and disrespect as much as they dared to but invariably concluded with a comforting moral, allowing both filmmaker and audiences to have their salacious cake and eat it, too.
